Texas police will be out in full force on St. Patrick’s Day. Whether you walk in the parade on Greenville Avenue or enjoy the festivities at the Dubliner, Libertine or The Old Crow, it is important to drink responsibly and avoid arrest.

Here are four tips to keep you out of jail on St. Patrick’s Day:
- Do Not Drink and Drive
Police will charge you with DWI if your BAC exceeds 0.08 percent. Everyone reacts to alcohol differently, and some people reach the legal limit after just two drinks.
Do not take the risk of moderately drinking and driving. Take a taxi, stay overnight or designate a sober driver.
- Do Not Let Passengers Drink in the Vehicle
It is against the law to have open alcohol containers anywhere inside the car. If a container was already opened, then seal it and place it inside the trunk. Do not allow your passengers to drink in your vehicle.
- Moderate Your Consumption
Alternate your alcoholic beverages with glasses of water. Other ways to drink responsibly include limiting consumption to one drink per hour and snacking throughout the night.
- Designate a Sober Driver
Designating a sober driver can ensure that everybody gets home safely. A drunk friend who is insistent on driving can be difficult to stop, but it is important to intervene.
Mothers Against Drunk Driving suggests calling the police if you cannot stop your friend from driving because dying is worse than being arrested. Before doing that, however, try these less drastic tips:
- You may face some drunken belligerence, but it is important to stay calm and avoid confrontation. Explain gently that another driver would be safer. Do not be condescending.
- Confiscate his or her keys. This is the most effective way to stop a driver. Store them safely.
- Do not weaken your resolve if the person gets angry. Simply say that you will give the keys back the moment a cab or sober friend arrives.
- If the person is a stranger to you, get his or her friends to help. You do not want a physical altercation. They can help you avoid one if he or she becomes aggressive.
- DWI charges are more expensive than rideshare and taxi services. Help the person by paying his or her fare.
