In Texas, theft is considered the act of taking property that belongs to another person, regardless of its value. The defendant will be convicted of theft if the prosecution can prove that he or she took the property with the intent to deprive the owner of the property.
Penalties for theft crimes are based on the nature of the crime and the amount or value of the property that was taken.
The classifications and penalties for theft crimes include:
- Class C misdemeanor ($50 and less): A fine of up to $500
- Class B misdemeanor (between $50 and $500): A fine of up to $2,000 and/or up to 180 days in jail
